You're not the only one

Do you have debts? Or no fixed place to sleep or home? You're not the only one. 15% of the people in Rotterdam have large debts. Around 32,000 people in the Netherlands have no place to sleep. How they end up in such a situation differs. But their thoughts and habits often resemble each other.

Feelings and thoughts you can recognize:

  • “I’m all alone” or “They abandoned me”

  • "I don't trust anyone anymore" or "They don't trust me anymore"

  • I always solve my problems myself. I'm proud of that"

  • "I'm ashamed of my problems"

  • "I feel guilty about help I get from others"

Habits you can recognize:

  • You don't read your mail anymore

  • You no longer respond to emails or phone calls

  • You have less and less contact with friends and family

  • You lose your job or get expelled from school

  • You have no fixed place to sleep

  • You often look for distraction, for example with alcohol or drugs

  • You react more quickly with anger or panic

You can't and don't have to do everything alone

Sadness and unhappiness are part of life. But when feelings can be so big that you don't know what to do anymore. If you're getting worse and worse, you could be in trouble. And the more problems there are, the harder it is to solve them on your own. Asking for help may be better. For yourself and for the people around you.
